Job Summary:
Primarily responsible for supporting and deploying networks, including but not limited to local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), firewalls, security appliances, and other data communications systems.
Senior Network Engineer will meet with the Architectural team to review the network design, build of materials and specified carrier requirements. Senior Network Engineer will be required to work with specified hardware and carrier vendors.
Essential Job Functions:
• Performs escalation troubleshooting and support for internal and external customer networks • Performs network maintenance and upgrades as required
Perform post-mortem analysis of implementation to record lessons learned for continual improvement of implementation process
Must possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Monitors network elements and researches anomalies such as bandwidth, response time, CPU and memory thresholds
• Establishes and maintains SNMP monitoring thresholds for routers, switches, and firewalls
• Maintains and supports the Solarwinds NMS system elements, alerts and databases
• Develops and maintains standard network configurations for all routers, switches and firewalls
• Troubleshoot and support firewall configuration issues and apply firewall rule change requests
• Work within the network engineering team and with the network operations center to develop and implement incident resolution and escalation processes.
• Analyzes daily/monthly reports of network outages and issues for anomalies and recurring issues
• Work with Software Development Manager or Software team in testing new application deployments against production network components
• Troubleshoots and resolves network WAN outages and escalates with telecom provider as needed
• Researches, resolves and documents Syslog generated error messages
• Analyzes firewall rules and alerts for intrusions and attacks
• Provides 24/7 on call support on a rotational basis
• Provides mentoring and training to the other network engineers
• Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications, Training and/or Experience:
• 6+ years supporting a large enterprise network
• Cisco CCNP certification preferred but equivalent professional knowledge in Routing and Switching, Security, or Data Center is acceptable
Job Requirements:
Education:
• BS in Computer Science, Engineering, MIS or related field (or commensurate experience)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
• Advanced network troubleshooting skills using standard troubleshooting methodologies
• Knowledge of simple network monitoring protocols (SNMP) and systems such as Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor, Network Configuration Manager and IP Address Management applications
• Knowledge of trouble ticketing systems and methodologies
• Ability to configure and troubleshoot Cisco networking devices such as layer 2/3 switches, routers, and firewalls
• Excellent knowledge of TCP/IP, including packet-level traffic analysis
• Advanced knowledge of spanning-tree, VTP, port channels and load balancing,
• Advanced ability in analyzing and troubleshooting packet captures using Wireshark
• Maintain documentation such as Visio diagram and Excel spreadsheet in support of implemented product offerings
• Troubleshoot and support routing protocols such as EIGRP, OSPF and BGP
• Advanced knowledge of WAN protocols and circuits; MPLS, Satellite, Cellular, Ethernet, DSL, FiOS
• Advanced knowledge of troubleshooting and supporting various VPN issues
• Ability to terminate and troubleshoot cabling for Ethernet, T1, and DS0 connections
• Advanced experience in supporting and troubleshooting VPN Technologies - IPSec, DMVPN, and site to site VPN solutions
• Advanced understanding of IP concepts including routing, sub-netting, and VLAN's
• Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP including IPv4 and IPv6
• Understanding of server virtualization technologies such as VMWare
• Ability to set up network lab virtualization software; GNS3 and VIRL, to test new software and configuration changes
• Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Requires excellent analytical, problem solving, organizational and time management skills.
